Changes

Key:  Additions   Deletions
This activity is suited for work with participants that are engaged in communications work in their organisations.

Purpose:To define communications
To get an overview of the range of communications tasks performed by participants.
Participants:At least 5, up to 20.

Time: about 60 min.

Materials:Flipcharts
Marker pens
Notebooks and pens
Process:1. Organise participants in small groups of 3-4. Assign the task:
  • Each participant gives a 3-minute presentation of his/her main tasks and responsibilities in the area of communications. During the presentations, the listeners compile a list of tasks.
Allow 10-15 min. for this exercise.
2. Do a quick round gathering the responses of participants on a flipchart.

3. Together with the group, try to categorise tasks and find headlines for each, such as media relations, internal communication, etc.

4. Ask the groups to get back together and develop a working definition of communications, based on the structured list of typical tasks.

5. Share definitions in plenary and select the best definition!
Note:
I would also add the communication process that involves the sender reaching out to the receiver and through a defined medium of communication. Celestin
