Handouts
Process:1. Organise participants in groups of 4 and assign the task: The groups should - based on their experience and some material provided - develop what they think is a good working definition of conflict. This they can do with the following steps:
  • First, every group member reflects individually and writes down what conflict means to him/her. Group members read the definitions to each other.
  • Second, the group studies a number of materials provided to them (see below handouts).
  • Third, the group makes an attempt to synthesise and tries to come up with one definition.
Allow for sufficient time in the groups (45 min.).

2. Let groups report back to the plenary. Write the definitions on a white board (or flip chart).

3. Together with the participants, highlight common elements and differences in the definitions provided. Now let the participants vote for one of the definitions - the one that they find best to work with. (If there is no "winning" definition, you can facilitate a process of developing a synthesis of the definitions with highest scores.)
