Activity: How was it when you experienced conflict?This is a featured page


Purpose:To support participants in understanding and internalising the personal dimension of change
Participants:4 to 20

Time: 60-80 min.

Materials:Notebooks and pens

Process:1. Introduce the personal dimension of change (click here). Your lecture should be brief and illustrative. Try to find some examples to make your point. Distribute the handout with content.

2. Organise participants in pairs and assign the task:
  • Participants should think about a time when they experienced conflict. This could have been a conflict in the family, with friends, neighbors or a violent conflict in their country.
  • When thinking about this experience, they should explore their attitudes and behaviour: How would they describe their feelings and thoughts? And what did they do? Did changes in their attitudes and behaviour occur throughout the conflict?
  • This exploration should occur in a telling-listening setting, i.e. each partner in the pair talks to his partner about these questions. The partner listens carefully and ask questions in order to understand attitudes and behaviour better.
  • Allow sufficient time for the pair interaction, ca. 45 min.
3. In plenary, discuss with participants what they have learned about the personal dimension with this exercise.


Note:
Sharing a personal experience of conflict in a group relies on an atmosphere of trust and confidence. It might be good to let participants chose themselves with whom they would like to pair up. This activity should take place at a time when participants have gotten to know each other.
