Purpose:To introduce "media"
To reach a common understanding of what media will include throughout the training
Participants:At least 5, up to 20

Time: 45-60 min.

Materials:Media outputs, such as newspapers, youtube clips, printouts from a webpage and/or blog, a video tape, a DVD, a radio, a book, etc.
Notebooks and pens
Flipchart
Marker pens
Process:1. Organise participants in groups of 4-5 (depending on overall group size). Distribute different kinds of media "outputs" or "representatives". Ask participants to study the examples in groups, identify common characteristics, and discuss how the term media could be defined. Let them write their ideas down on flipcharts.

Give groups at least 30 min. time to discuss.

2. Let groups report back to plenary with the help of their flipcharts.

3. Try to develop a working definition of media together with participants. Write it on a separate flip chart so that it is visible throughout the training.
