Activity: One conflict, different lensesThis is a featured page

This activity to apply a number of the tools for analysis provided in the contents part of the resource kits.

Purpose:To apply tools for conflict analysis
To identify strengths and weaknesses of different tools
To raise awareness that there is not one perfect tool that fits every conflict, but that the tools can be used as different lenses to look at different elements of the conflict and that a combination of tools might lead to a deeper and more comprehensive understanding
Participants:10-20

Time: 2-3 hrs.

Materials:Lots with names of tools, bowl or other container to draw a lot from
Flip charts and marker pens
Handouts summarising conflict analysis tools
Materials for the conflict case

Process:1. This activity should ideally take place after participants have already been familiarised with a number of simple tools, such as conflict mapping, conflict stages, conflict tree and peace flower, force field analysis. Decide which tools are most relevant for the group and workshop topic and select 4 tools. Prepare lots with the names

2. Organise participants in 4 groups. One member of each group draws a lot and thereby determines which conflict analysis tool the group will work with. The lot is not opened before the task has been assigned to the group.

3. All groups are asked to analyse the same conflict, applying the tool that has been drawn. The conflict that is to be analysed can either be from the context of the participants, or you can chose another conflict and prepare materials for the analysis before hand. In the latter variant, you have to allow for more time, so that the teams can digest the provided materials. Alternatively, you can chose a conflict case study from
Centre for Conflict Resolution, Case Studies of Conflict in Africa, in: Track Two. Constructive Approaches to Community and Political Conflict, Vol. 12, Nos 3 and 4, University of Cape Town: 2003. <http://www.ccr.uct.ac.za/fileadmin/template/ccr/pdf/TT12-3_4_Sep05.pdf> (accessed 4 August 2009).

4. The conflict analyses of the groups are presented in plenary. Encourage participants to be creative in developing visual aids for their presentation.

5. Based on this exercise, facilitate the following reflection process in plenary:
  • Discuss each tool and ask: What are specific strengths? What can we learn about when we are using this tool? What does the tool miss that we find important about the conflict?
  • How can the tools be combined in the best and still doable and efficient way, in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the conflict?
