Activity: Step 4 - Behavior over time graphsThis is a featured page

Purpose:To detect patterns of behavior for the key variables of conflict
Participants:8 to about 20

Time: 60-90 min.

Materials:White board (from step 4)
Flip charts
Marker pens
Plain A4 papers
Pens
Masking tape
Process:1. Organise participants in small groups of 3-4. Depending on the number of key variables the groups can either work with all variables or just with half of them.

2. Ask groups to discuss each key variable separately: How has this variable developed over time? Can you for example identify major turning points, stagnation, intensification, decrease? Ask the groups to draw on A4 papers a behavior over time graph for each of the variables. Remind them to label the axes. It should take about 10 min. for each variable. Ask groups to display their graphs on the walls. If several groups have worked with the same variables (likely), they should be displayed in one column.

3. Discuss the results of the group work with the participants:
  • Identify potential differences for the same variable. Select the graph that the group finds most accurate.
  • Compare the different variables with one another. What is surprising? What can you conclude about the causal inter-relationships?
The behavior over time graphs can later be attached to the variables in the causal loop diagram of the conflict system.
