Activity: Step 5 - Causal loopsThis is a featured page


Purpose:To develop the conflict system's structure (causal loop diagram of the conflict)
Participants:8 to about 20

Time: How long this takes will largely depend on the complexity of the system you are looking at. At least 2 hrs. seem reasonable.

Materials:White board (from step 3)
Flip charts
Marker pens
Masking tape

Process:1. Organise participants in groups of 3-4. Assign groups to spend one hour on experimenting in order to develop the causal loop diagram for the conflict. Remind participants of some guidelines for developing causal loops (see here). The grouping of variables that was done in step 3 can now help to find a starting point. Participants can try to focus on sub-systems of variables first. Interrelations between the subsystems can be the second step. Groups can use flip charts to draw the system structure.

2. Ask the groups to present their findings in plenary. In addition to explaining to the others how they explain the causal inter-relations, this is also an opportunity to point out to the group where they think more reflection and discussion is needed. Presentations will take up to 30 min. depending on number of groups.

3. In a group process, develop now the causal loop on the white board. Probe for the labels (+ and -) for links, see whether you have to insert intervening variables in order to make a link clearer.

4. Stick the behavior over time graphs next to the variables in the causal loop diagram. Probe whether the graphs and the causal loop diagram make sense together.
