Activity: Systems everywhereThis is a featured page

Purpose: To introduce the concept of systems to participants
Participants:4 to 20

Time: 35-45 min.

Materials:Flip charts or white board
Marker pens

Process: 1. Start by writing “system” in big letters on a flip chart or white board.

2. In multi-cultural group, ask participants to get up and write on the board what the word for system would be in their language.

Note: This process is interesting as some participants might not find a word for the term in their language. This could indicate that the concept of system is rather uncommon in their contexts.

3. Now, ask participants to call out examples of systems and write them down. Do this until no new examples come up and the process slows down. (roughly 10 min.)

Now, you can add some examples of basic systems that participants might not have thought about: a bath tub, bank account, the environment. It is also interesting to observe whether participants call out the word “conflict” as an example for conflict. Looking at the examples you can state that obviously systems are everywhere around us.

4. Let groups get together in pairs, allocating two or three examples to each pair (depending on number of participants and examples) and ask them to discuss for some minutes why the “thing” is an example of a system, in other word: What does it make a system?

5. Now, write an accessible definition of system on a new flipchart. [For instance: “A system is a group of interacting, interrelated, and interdependent components that form a complex and unified whole.” (“What is Systems Thinking” www.thesystemsthinker.com/systemsthinkinglearn.html)]

6. Select some examples from the list and let participants describe components and how their interactions form a whole.
