| Purpose: | To introduce behavior over time graphs to participants through a simple exercise |
| Participants: | 4 to 20 or more |
| Time: | 20-30 minutes |
| Materials: | Flip charts Marker Pens Notebooks and pens |
| Process: | 1. Introduce that for understanding a system, it is necessary to see how things and their relationship to another change over time. 2. On a flip chart draw the basic structure of a Behavior over time graph (a horizontal axis for time and a vertical one for a variable, i.e. a thing that changes, such as speed, the amount of dollars on a bank account/in your purse, the amount of food in your stomach, or more “abstract” things such as power (that can increase or decrease), discrimination, prejudices, frustration, anger, etc.). 3. Ask participants to draw a behavior over time graph in their note books and observe how your “behavior” changes when you walk from one side of the room to the other. The variable that they should pay attention to first is your speed. 4. Now walk from one side of the room to the other in exactly the same pace. Ask participants to explain to you how they have drawn the graph. The graph should look like that: 5. Repeat the exercise, but now start walking slowly, but getting faster as you get closer to the other side of the room. How have participants now drawn the graph? Note: The point is here of course not to get a mathematically exact graph – use this example to illustrate the basic idea of behavior over time graphs. 6. Allow for questions from participants. |
