Activity: The three PsThis is a featured page

This activity applies the analytical model "3 Ps".

Purpose:To increase participants' conflict analysis capacities by applying the "3 Ps" model to a conflict case study
Participants:4 to 20 (should also work with more participants)

Time: approximately 2 hours, can be extended if peacebuilding strategies are brainstormed (see step 4 below).

Materials:Flip charts
Marker pens
Note books and pens
Handout with conflict case
Handout with the "3 Ps" model
Process:1. Present the "3 Ps" model for conflict analysis as one framework that can be used to analyse conflict. Use a visual aid with the triangle (People, Problems, Processes). Allow for questions for clarification from the participants.

2. Organise participants in groups of 3-4 (depending on the total number of participants), distribute handouts with the conflict case as well as the handout summarising the "3Ps" model. All groups should deal with the same case study. Assign the task to the groups: Participants are asked to develop an analysis of the case using the "3 Ps" framework. Allow sufficient time for the group work (60-70 min.).

3. In plenary, groups present their analysis of the case. Here, they can use flip charts as visual aids.

4. After all have presented their analysis, facilitate a discussion with e.g. the following questions:
  • How useful was the analytical tool to understand the conflict?
  • Are their significant differences in the conflict analyses presented by the groups? If so: What reasons do group members see for these differences?
  • Based on this analysis, what ideas for developing a peacebuilding strategy emerge? (From analysis to strategy!)
