Activity: Vision of success - Where do we want to go?This is a featured page

One of the key tenets of results-based management is to start designing your initiative by determining where you want to go first. This activity is meant to facilitate a process for a group/organisation/initiative to identify its vision of success, a plausible and realistic picture of the state reached when the engagement had success.

Purpose:To identify and reach consensus about an initiative's/project's/programme's vision of success
Participants:3-8/9

Time: 60-90 minutes

Materials:Flipcharts
Marker pens (different colours)
Notebooks and pens

Process:1. Ask one participant to give a recap of the previous two activities, namely understanding the context and reflecting the target group. Complement if you think anything vital was not mentioned.

2. Write the term "vision of success" in capital letters on the flip chart and ask another participant to briefly explain what a vision of success is to the group, based on the introductory lecture that was provided earlier in the process.

3. Ask participants to organise in groups of two and discuss the question: "In light of the conflict context and the group(s) you want to work with, what would success of your initiative look like?" Give 10 min time for the pair discussions.

4. Now, participants should take some time in silence and try to formulate a vision of success. Give sufficient time.

5. When participants have jotted down a vision, let them read their vision of success to you and write them on the flipchart. Make sure that all visions of success are visible for everyone.

6. Now, ask participants to identify common elements (circle) and differences (underline). If there are major differences, facilitate a discussion in the group. Together with the group, try to reach a commonly agreed vision of success that everyone can sign up to.
