Changes

Key:  Additions   Deletions
This activity should ideally be used after having introduced the concept of results chains. It asks groups of participants to use the results chain concept for a practical example: building a house!

Purpose:To help participants digest the concept of results chain with a real life practical example.
Participants:4 to many.

Time: 20-3030-45 minutes.

Materials:Flipcharts
Marker Pens (different colors)
Process:1) Give an introduction to the concept of results chains (an introductory lecture you can find here.)

2) Explain to participants that they are now asked to apply the concept practically, with an example that is familiar to everyone - building a house.

3) Organise participants in small groups of 3-4 and give the task to them to develop a results chain for the building of a house. In order to help them, them do this, describe the "current situation".situation": A family (4 children) has been living in a small house with just one room in a quite remote rural area. After inheriting some land and money from a childless paternal uncle, the family decides to build a house. Ask participants to develop the results chain (from impact down to inputs). They should try it by starting with the long-term result and then go down in the chain first.

4) Let the groups discuss and note their results chain on a flipchart. Walk the room and assist the groups. If you realise that groups get stuck because they are starting from the long-term result, encourage them to also start from the bottom of the chain.

5) Ask participants to stick their flip charts to the wall in front of the room and to read the results chains of the other groups.

6) Facilitate a discussion about the results of the exercise and use the opportunity to clarify the concept once again.
