a) Defining Communication

Though communication constitutes social life in all aspects, it is hard to provide a definition capturing the complexity of this social phenomenon. In general, communication describes the process of exchanging information between sender and receiver, using a medium (channel). Through this process, meaning is created. Communication is a form of social behaviour.

b) Communication and conflict
The relationship between conflict and communication is complex. This resource kit will not deal with this issue, but please refer to the following paper for further information:

Robert M. Krauss and Ezequiel Morsella. "Communication and Conflict." Morton Deutsch and Peter T. Coleman, eds., The Handbook of Conflict Resolution: Theory and Practice San Francisco: Jossey-Bas Publishers, 2000, pp. 131-143. Also available at: www.columbia.edu/~rmk7/PDF/Confl.pdf This paper asks under what conditions does communication reduce conflict? The authors examine four models of communication. From these models, they derive seven principles of conflict-reducing communication.

c) Defining Communications
In this resource kit, communications will be defined as the strategic use of communication means by organizations in order to contribute to the achievement of the organization’s goals. Communication therefore refers to one function in the organisational system. An organization communicates internally (organisational communication) and externally (Public Relations, Marketing Communication). The focus of the resource kit is on external communication.
