Power of the purseThis is a featured page

Purpose:To introduce the idea of stock and flow to participants
To apply it to an every day and conflict example
Participants:4 to 20 or more

Time: 50 min.

Materials:Flip charts
Marker pens
Note books and pens
Process:1. Start by introducing the concept of stocks and flows to participants. (click here for content) The introduction should not take longer than 10 min. Distribute handouts to participants.

2. Ask participants to think about their purse as a system with stocks and flows. Let them take some minutes to "draw" the system on their notebooks (similarly to the bathtup example).

3. Now let participants get together in small groups and brainstorm how the stock and flow diagram could be used for variables that are occuring in conflict systems. You can first brainstorm some variables in plenary. Examples might be: violence, casualties, number of conflict parties, discrimination of minority, etc.

4. After 20 min. ask groups to present their example in plenary. Ask whether and what difficulties they encountered compared to the "purse" example.
