Tell me about your assumptionsThis is a featured page

Purpose:To digest the concept of theories of change
To start a reflection process about theories of change applied in participants' work
Participants:2 to many. For more than 20 participants, make sure that there is enough space to sit in pairs.

Time: 30-60 minutes.

Materials:Flipcharts, markers. (Prepared visual aids if possible).
Notebooks, pens.
Questionnaire (see below handouts).
Process:1. Make a short presentation (10 min.), introducing theories of change. Make sure that you keep it simple and give one clear example. You can prepare illustrative visual aids before hand.

2. Divide the group into pairs.
It is good if the pair is composed of participants from different organisations.

3.
Ask the participants to interview each other. The interview will focus on one project/programme that the participant works with. The interviewer uses a simple questionnaire (See handout below) and asks his/her interview partner in order to find out some of the underpinning assumptions that make up theories of change. Participants takes notes on

4. The roles of interviewer and interviewee are switched after 10-15 min.

5. After the interviews have been completed, ask participants to get back into the plenary. Then make a round, asking participants to say in few sentences what they learned about how and why the interviewee's project brings about change.

Note:

Handout(s): 1. I would like to hear from you about one of the projects that you/your organisation are currently engaged with. Can you give me an example of such a project and describe what change the project wants to produce? What is your overall goal?

2. What are you doing to bring about this change?

3. Why do you think, this strategy will change things in the project context?

Source(s):This activitiy was inspired by a workshop with Reina Neufeldt in Uppsala, February 2008.
