Arms for sale - at what cost?
Sweden-based Life & Peace Institute looks at a business 15 times bigger than the global aid budget.

Arms production and trade is a lucrative business with an annual turnover 15 times bigger than the world’s international aid. But the profit of some is the loss of others. Resources that are used for purchase of arms instead of health care, education and food production bereave people of their most basic needs. Therefore it is fair to say that arms kill also when not in use.
The journal New Routes latest issue (3.2010), which is just released, looks at global arms trade and its consequences. What impact does the arms trade have on daily life in South Africa, Colombia and Sri Lanka? Is it possible to control that arms do not end up in wrong hands? What does the arms industry have to say about these questions?
New Routes is available free of charge online at www.life-peace.org. It is also possible to order a hard copy from the office in Uppsala or the Africa offices in Nairobi, Bukavu or Khartoum. The previous thematic issue of New Routes, looking at Extractive industries (no 2.2010) is also available for download on the website, or hard copies on request.
